Welcome back and happy Monday! Today’s Mindful Monday pose is a hip opener known as goddess pose or utkata konasana. As always, please consult a physician prior to beginning this or any other exercise regiment.

Hip openers not only strengthen the hips and legs, but the opening of the hips allows for a great (and at times overwhelming) release of emotions from the body.

Begin in mountain pose at the top of your mad with your arms by your side. Turn to the right and step your feet wide apart, at a width that is comfortable to you. Turn your toes our slightly so that they point to the corners of your mat.

On an exhale, bend your knees directly over your toes and lower your hips into a squat. Work toward bringing your thighs parallel to the floor. Keep your feet flat on the floor or for a more intense stretch and balance, come up onto the balls of your feet as shown here.

Tuck your tailbone in slightly and press your hips forward as your draw your thighs back. For an even deeper pose, bend at the hips. Hold for 10 deep breaths.
