50 Ways to Practice Self-Care by Catherine Cottam #CompassionOrBust

Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, last week probably offered at least a bit of a shock for you.  While some people are celebrating, others are fearful for what the future will hold.  No matter which side of the aisle you’re on, self-care should always be a part of your daily routine, as people who practice self-care regularly are less prone to depression and anxiety and see physical health benefits as well.  Some people may be needing a little extra self-care this week.  Everyone practices self-care a little differently so not all of these ideas will work for all people.  Without further ado…

  1. Go for a short walk
  2. Drink a glass of water
  3. Listen to your favorite song
  4. Pet your dog or cat
  5. Journal
  6. Look at the stars
  7. See a friend
  8. Make and keep an appointment with your counselor
  9. Sit outside
  10. Read part of your favorite book
  11. Watch your favorite movie
  12. Get your favorite take-out
  13. Take a bath or shower
  14. Go to sleep early or take a nap
  15. Watch a TED Talk
  16. Read a book
  17. Volunteer
  18. Take three deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth
  19. Do yoga
  20. Have a piece of chocolate
  21. Make a cup of hot tea
  22. Burn your favorite candle
  23. Color
  24. Go on a hike
  25. Eat a snack
  26. Pray or meditate
  27. Unplug- put everything on airplane mode or turn it off for an hour
  28. Avoid news- television, magazines, facebook, internet, etc. for 24 hours
  29. Write down five things you are grateful for
  30. Get a massage
  31. Take a day trip
  32. Plan a staycation
  33. Say no to something you don’t want to do
  34. Say yes to something you may be nervous about
  35. Choose an affirmation and repeat it out loud ten times- “I am _________”
  36. Do something that will make you laugh- like reading a Cracked.com article
  37. Sing
  38. Call a family member
  39. Make time to be still and alone
  40. Take a short break at work
  41. Write down five things you like about your body
  42. Moisturize your skin
  43. Do nothing for 2 minutes
  44. Splash water on your face
  45. Take half an hour and indulge in a guilty pleasure (crafts, TV, food, etc. as long as it doesn’t harm you)
  46. Write yourself a love letter
  47. Create a vision board
  48. Write down a long list of things you love

  50. Ask a friend or family member for a hug
